caugiran is in san francisco where the district is providing school counselors for kids there today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. obviously this is a difficult time for everyone not just there on the east coast but here in the bay area, as well. parents and teachers are reaching out for what to say to their students and to their children. san francisco's unified school district posted this message on its website. district leaders offered their thoughts and sympathies and said we are all grieving today. the district says grief counselors will be available for students and educators to help them cope with last friday's shooting. the horrifying images and senseless violence from the newtown shootingville packed everyone across the country. district leaders say they want to be cognizant of the emotional needs of students but they also want students to know they are safe. >> this is a random -- an isolated event and it's -- it could happen to anyone anywhere, though it most likely will not. >> reporter: dr. berry says younger children will have a harder time understanding and it's

with the death of a man who was one of two people found bound and gagged on a san francisco street. police are not saying much on the relationship between the suspect and the victims, only that there was some kind of extensive relationship. there are many unanswered questions. police revealed some details at a news conference earlier this evening. >> the motive for the attack is under investigation. i won't be able to get into the details as far as what led to the attack. i can say that the male victim appeared to have blunt force trauma and gunshot wounds to the upper body. the cause of death is pending the examination of the coroner's autopsy report. >> the man identified as steven reed died after being taken to the hospital. the young woman is still in serious condition. the san francisco district attorney's office tells us they have not yet received the case. >>> three peninsula city police chiefs updated residents on "separation smart" this evening, the program launched for curbing gang violence. >> reporter: there have been more than a dozen gang-related shootings in east palo alto
to san francisco research to clear up. give yourself extra time. >> hayward firefighters investigate an apartment fire that happened here dickson street and the bay of this the avenue this morning. that is where we find jackie sissel to tell us about what happened with the fire. >> everyone got out ok and that is a good news. the damage is done to these two- story apartment. right here you can see the bottom floor and as i cannot even see the top floor. both are from the same unit and they were lucky to get out. here is a video shot by the hayward fire department your ride on the scene around 4:00 a.m.. that is one that got the call of the fire at the 29,000 block of dickson street. a multi unit apartment complex. they did indeed find a fully engulfed unit and upstairs and downstairs. at that point they were told to people at self evacuate it. a mother and son had gotten out of the apartment but unharmed. they were ablenock on the flames relatively quickly. it only went to a single alarm. they do say that some smoke and water damage occurred at a nearby apartment. that had four peopl

that separated dozens of homes from the san francisco-quito creek are holding up. the creek or float on sunday night causing mandatory evacuations for seven homes. at least one home was damaged to the point of being uninhabitable. no further work has been scheduled. but the city continues to keep a close eye on the levee. >> all the rain over christmas-a down the southbound side of the upper great highway from lincoln avenue to slow boulevard. a spokesperson at the centers is the department of public works say that the rose flood because the drains cannot handle all the water, especially during a powerful storm. drivers are being forced to take the lower great highway route. the northbound side is still open. officials say that highway close about 60 times a year. it is not known when the southbound side will reopen. >> the storm also brought down a massive tree in the east bay. the one fell right on the footsteps of the delta and chi fraternity house on channing way in berkeley. however when the tree fell a loosen the soil of a neighboring treat the had terrible for safety reasons. >> santa r
